Can someone help me with this equation? Equation in comment.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[ |4x + 3| \le 19 \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve the absolute value inequality

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x + 3 ≤ 19 - 3 -3 4x ≤ 16

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

That's the first step yes. 4x + 3 >=-19 Is the second step

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-head tilt- 4x + 3 ≤ -19? -3 - 3 4x ≤ -22

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

Not less than or equal -19. greater than or equal to -19

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't get it. :c Am I right or wrong?

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

Wrong. |x|<=b is similar to -b<=x<=b where b is a non negative real number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whut o3o

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

\[-19 \le 4x + 3 \le 19\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Isn't mine right? It's going to equal 5.5 either way.

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

You're saying it's less than or equal to -5.5 I say it's \[-5.5 \le x \le 4\] huge difference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I honestly don't even know what it is saying. -nodnod-

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

Another example: Do you know the difference between x>5 and x<5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

Learn these two rules and try to understand them: if a and b are non negative real numbers, then: |x| > b then x<-b OR x>b |x| < a Then -a < x < a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But. The only answers i'm allowed to choose from are these. :I

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x less than or greater to -5.5 or x greater than or equal to 5.5 x greater than or equal to -5.5 or x less than or greater to 4 x less than or greater to -5.5 or x greater than or equal to 4 x less than or greater to -5.5 and x greater than or equal to 4

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

Are you sure you typed the initial problem correctly?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve the absolute value inequality: |4x + 3| \[\ge\] 19

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

... Okay. So then it's 4x + 3 >= 19 or 4x + 3 <= -19

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x + 3 >= 19 - 3 -3 4x >= 16 x >= 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x + 3 <= -19 -3 -3 4x <= -22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = -5.5 Now am I right?

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

Correct phrasing: x less than or equal to -5.5 OR x greater than or equal to 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let's try this one! >:D Solve the absolute value inequality: |2x - 3| < 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|2x - 3| < 5 +3 +3 2x < 8 x < 4

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

50%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|2x - 3| < -5 +3 +3 2x < -2 2x > 2 x > 1

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

nope. you didn't read what I said. I can't help you if you won't listen to me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What did I do wrong?

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

|x| < a -a < x < a where a is not negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't get it.

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

using numbers instead of letters: |x| < 5 Then -5 < x < 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But I already told you the answers are only ANDS OR ORS.

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

-5 < x < 5 means x larger than -5 AND x smaller than 5 I suggest you go read the terminology

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They don't teach us that because it isn't basic.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Slaaibak, I came to the same conclusion: http://openstudy.com/users/thehero#/updates/4ef2680fe4b0dc507db6d7b1
