A discharge tube is also called an emission tube. It is a narrow glass tube filled with a gas. When electricity is passed through it, light is produced, much like a fluorescent lamp. Different kinds of gas produce different colors. This is what led to the development of the wave theory, quantum mechanics, and atomic orbitals.
