A triangle OAP has vertices O(0,0) A(4,0) and P(x,y). The triangle has an area of 12 square units. Find the locus of P as it moves. PLEASE EXPLAIN :) thanks

Right off the bat, what level of math is this?

highschool year 11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright. It doesn't actually matter, I misread your question :) Well the area of the triangle is 1/2 b*h, is that correct? Letting the first leg, from (0,0) to (4,0) be the base part, we find that h must be 6.

For instance,|dw:1324883413959:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes that is correct i have to show in terms of loci

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Find the length of the sides -> Find the area -> equate this area to 12 -> Do algebraic manipulation to form a equation in terms of (x,y) -> you are done.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops. That should be a six on the right. Or, we could have |dw:1324883467567:dw| or even|dw:1324883506092:dw|
