The Department's Student Assessment Section recommends that the size of the scratch paper be 8 1/2 x 11 because students will need to place it next to their computers/laptops along with the mathematics reference sheet (grades 4-8 and 10 only) and a hand held four function calculator. The blank paper may be white or any color that is light enough so that students can see whatever they write or draw on it. All students must use blank scratch paper during the administration of the Mathematics Assessment. Recycled paper that is blank on one side and has something printed on the other side may not be used. Lined paper, graph paper, tracing paper, and paper with boxes for students' calculations may not be used for the Mathematics Assessment because they were not allowed during the field testing of the mathematics items and all students must be tested statewide using standardized mathematics tools and procedures to ensure that none of them are given an unfair advantage in answering the test questions.
