Two balls are dropped from a height of 6 m. Ball A bounces back up to a height of 4m whereas ball B bounces back up to 2m. Which ball experiences the larger impulse during its collision with the floor? (a) ball A (b) ball B (c) both experiences the same impulse. (d) its impossible to tell without knowing the masses of the balls.

OpenStudy (turingtest):

\[I=\Delta p\]where Delta p is the change in momentum given by\[mv_2-mv_1\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is ball a

OpenStudy (turingtest):

I don't see how you can get the answer without the masses.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes exactly turingtest and john4m2 why is it ball A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah it`s true but you can determine through their heghts after bouncing and determine the greater mass and it`s impossible to solve for the impulse

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the question asks about the impulse, is it possible to compare the two impulses without the masses?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah actually

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright, so its option (d) then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Impulse is the change of momentum by definition and so Option d may be correct but if we consider the balls having same mass then they experience same impulse
