Parsons sick role is from a functionalist perspective which evaluates being sick as a deviant behavior because the sick person cannot function.  The sick person is excused from work and other responsibilities during this sickness but it is incumbent upon the sick person to get well as if the person wanted to get sick.  The model requires that the person gets well to function however some chronically ill people never get well.  Back in his day, people either got well, or they died, there was no in between.  The model is so problematic for the obvious reasons. It does not consider psychological models that may have people exaggerate sickness to get relieved from duties and for attention as a person with  munchalsens and Munchalsen's by proxy.  Sickness is more complicated today, and medical professionals have  more of an incentive to keep you in treatment than to get you totally well.
