What formula do I use to solve for w and z if I know he value of x and y where x is 15% of the spread between w and z above w and y is 15% of the spread between w and z below z?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do we mean by spread? Is this a geometric term?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I should have stated the difference between w and z.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

do you mean this?\[x=w+\frac{15(z-w)}{100}\]\[y=z-\frac{15(z-w)}{100}\]

OpenStudy (mertsj):

x=.15z and y = .15w

OpenStudy (mertsj):

So z =- x/.15 and w = y/.15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

asnaseer has the right formula, but I don't know how to utilize it in a spreadsheet to solve for both w and z given x and y.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

ok, my equations can be simplified to:\[20x=17w+3z\]\[20y=17z+3w\]so now you have 2 equations in 2 unknowns (z and w) which you should be able to solve.
