why mitochondria called power house of cell?
Well imagine a city and pretend that city is the cell, what function does the "power house" or "power station" provide?
it is called the power house of cell as it contains ATP i.e adenosine triphosphate so during muscular contraction energy is released from the ATP which is inside mitochondria
becoz it provide enrgy as energy produced from mitochondria as asra said the process thats why it is called power house or factory
because that's where the process of the Calvin Cycle takes place. this process, after Glycolysis, make the most ATP (adenosine triphoshpate). total ATP made during cellular respiration is around the number of thirty six. in glycolysis, there is two ATP made. in the Calvin cycle, there is anywhere from thirty two to thiry four ATP synthesized during respiration.
@ 12mcguirke, the Calvin Cycle takes place in plants. Do plants have mitochondria? They have chloroplasts which are analogous organelles in that they serve similar functions in energy production, but they're not mitochondria. Please don't post misleading answers. Mitochondria are sometimes called power plants because they are the cite of the Tricarboxylic Acid (TCA) cycle, also called the Krebs cycle, and of proton transport. Both these processes result in the formation of high energy intermediates like ATP from sugars, lipids and other energy storeage forms.
Yep, that's true looks like 12mcguirke got the calvin cycle and the citric acid cycle/TCA cycle mixed up, these things happen! Just remember that TCA cycle is the ones that occurs in the mitochondrian and is the one that produces energy for all organisms, including plants, with the use of carbohydrates, fats and proteins (food) to produce energy. Anyway I didn't want to confuse this already confused thread :) But remember that plants have both mitochondria and chloroplasts.
@blue mitochondria is found in plants but in a small amount compare to chloroplast so normally we neglect the mitochindria.
