Can someone please help me on #5??~~ http://www.math-drills.com/orderofoperations/ooo_integers_sixsteps_negative_pemdas_001.pdf

OpenStudy (phi):

the trick is to know that -1 to an odd power is -1, example -1^3 = -1*-1*-1= 1*-1=-1 to and even power -1 is +1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

work inside the parentheses first, and the first thing you need inside the parentheses is the exponent. what phi said \[(-1)^9=-1\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did this help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you do the smaller parenthesis first ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now you have \[3+((-1)\times 2+10+(-9))^8\] next step is multiplication inside the parentheses and \[-1\times 2=-2\]giving \[3+(-2+10+(-9))^8\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the parentheses about the -1 and the -9 are different then the parentheses about the whole thing. they are to indicate that you are adding -9 to 10. they are needed because in math you are not allowed to write \[10+-9\] but instead have to write \[10+(-9)\] but there is nothing to actually "do" in this case

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you you were a great help :D

OpenStudy (phi):

Did you get 4 for the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@phi yeah i got 4:D thanx for ur time :D
