what's the difference between pmf and cdf?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am asked to graph cdf of X but it would be same as P(X=0) P(X=1) and etc? or I need to draw like P(X>0) and P(X>1) and etc?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

while you are at that, what's pdf?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

portable document format, but im asking about pmf and cdf not pdf and cdf lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

probability mass function and cumulative distribution function

OpenStudy (zarkon):

if \(X\) is a discrete r.v. then the pmf of \(x\) is \(P(X=x)\) the CDF of \(X\) is \(P(X\le x)\)

OpenStudy (zarkon):

pmf of \(X\) is...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if i have defined x of 1, 2 and so on with probability and im asked is cdf defined for x=1.9? should i just make approximation from graph? or answer no?

OpenStudy (zarkon):

\[F_{X}(x)=P(X\le x)\] \[F_{X}(1.9)=P(X\le 1.9)=P(X\le 1)\]

OpenStudy (zarkon):

note that all CFD's are right continuous...so it has to be defined everywhere

OpenStudy (zarkon):

* CDF's
