I [did] that. I [went] there. For Past Continuous, it would have been "I was doing that. I was going there". past Simple shows an an action that happened in the past and you know WHEN it happened. For example, "I read an article yesterday". If the time when the action finished is not mentioned, then it is Present perfect, "I have read an article". Hope this helps :)
