The triangle is the Greek letter Delta. Delta, in math and physics, represents a simplification of differential and integral functions. For example, Force is defined as \[F = ma = m{dv \over dt}\]If the acceleration is constant, we can represent Force as\[F = m {\Delta v \over \Delta t} = m {v_2 - v_1 \over t_2 - t_1}\]What we see from this example, is that when acceleration is constant, we can represent the differential \(dv / dt\) as \(\Delta v / \Delta t\). We also see that \(\Delta v / \Delta t\) represents the difference of endpoints of the interval in time we are interested in.
