is it -35 + 10=-25?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

your answer is correct but the method you used to get it is wrong. the vertical bars on either side of the inner expression mean "absolute value of" or "magnitude of". so you should evaluate the expression inside the vertical bars first as follows:\[\begin{align} -|35-10|&=-|25|\\ &=-(25)\\ &=-25 \end{align}\] as an example of where your method could go wrong, consider this one:\[\begin{align} -|10-35|&=-|-25|\\ &=-(25)\\ &=-25 \end{align}\]your method would have resulted in:\[\begin{align} -|10-35|&=-10+35\\ &=25 \end{align}\] basically |3|=3, |-3|=3. i.e. "magnitude of" means "ignore the sign of the result, just look at how big the value is.
