x-intercepts don't have anything to do with the extrema per se, just because there is an extrema doesn't mean it has to cross the x-axis. For example, take the graph y=x^2+2, that never cross the x-axis but has a minimum. In general however, an n-order polynomial will have n-1 extrema AT MOST.
