In ribosomes, the 'tunnel' from the active site to the outside of the macromolecule is large enough to accommodate a fully formed alpha helix. Some scientists speculate that alpha helices form in this tunnel and the proteins then form higher level structures in solution. In general, how would you test this hypothesis?
