well, a lot of things happened in the west before, during, and after. The main thing is the development of popular sovereignty in these territories. this led bleeding Kansas which massacred many people, people would travel to these territories just to vote on the slavery issue. also during the civil war, once the north captured the Mississippi river, this cut off most of the supplies to the west, draining the west off needed supplies.
