Why ice cube near the surface but misty in the core?

I would assume it's because water freezes from the out side in and the misty center you are talking about are micro cracks where the outside meet in the middle.

as icemountain forming, salt and other impurities are ruled out of the ice, now why misty form in there? Doesn't the misty mean the impurities, too?
