Could a scale on a map apply for area as well as length? I mean, one scale for both?

Yes, I think that's possible but I'm not sure how. Others might help though.

For example, if you had a gridded map and let 1 square be 1km^2. With the scale of the map being 1 square is equal to 1km high by 1km wide.
