This is very basic, I'm sure, but I am not clear about if the DNA molecule is always split up into chromosomes or if that happens at a certain stage. Many thanks.

dna molecule present as chromosome. like its piece of strand it becomes visible at only certain stages

The chromosome is an organized DNA strand (in eukaryotes its very long and linear) that is bound up in proteins. These are compacted into the nucleus and are called chromatin. They vary in the degree of compaction during the stage in the cell cycle
