Let f(x) = 3x2 + x – 3 and g(x) = x2 – 5x + 1. Find f(x) – g(x).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(x)-g(x) = 3x2 + x – 3-(x2 – 5x + 1)

So is it 2x^2 - 4x - 2 or do you use the negative in front of the parenthesis for each thing inside to make it become 2x^2 +6x - 4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you distribute the negative into the parentheses: 3x^2+x-3-x^2+5x-1=2x^2+6x-4

Awesome. Thanks!
