Like physics, if I travel for 3 hours at 60 miles per hour, how far have I gone? Trigonometry can be used to find the height of trees. The main thing to realize is that math applied to something doesn't mean that what you're looking at is actually what is happening. Mathematics is likely invented by people as a simplification to model what we see and experience, rather than something people discovered. But who knows?
