You have a right triangle because no matter what a is you will always have a 90 degree angle and it is also isosceles triangle because both legs are of the same length.

...and the reason it's a 90 degree angle is because (a,0) and (0,a) each lie on different coordinate axes; x and y respectively. Coordinate axes are at right angle at each other.
