same write all numbers that aren 00,(4.05). put a decimal after the first number (4 in this case)... and count all the 0 to the left, those 0 made the exponent, since there are 4 digits to the left after the decimal point, 4 is the exponent.... and since ur counting digits to the left is a negative exponent . 4.05 x 10^-4 is right

It's pretty easy when you get the hang of it. You just move the decimal as many places as the exponent dictates; 1.4 * 10^3, move it right 3 places: 1400. 8.6 * 10^-4, move it left 4 places: 0.00086 and so on.
