If hominids regularly ate meat, then that suggests a higher degree of social organization than if they did not. The degree of social organization of the species says something important about their evolutionary state.

We, homo sapiens, are extremely socially organized. Knowing when our ancestors began farther down the social organization path is important and good to know.
