it was a sarcastic comment. Gene meant to play the game blitzball which they both have made. and the rules are made by them. and he was asking to play it according to rules. so it was a lie and a sarcastic remark. and finny always played the game according to rules and he said no to Genes's question. So it was a lie of him too.
