Can anyone help me with this problem? Jamal is a safety inspector for a family gym. Recently, guests have been complaining about the diving board saying that it is leaning towards the water. Jamal needs to know whether this diving board is standing up straight or not. Jamal measures the height of the diving board to be 12 feet. The pool is 15 feet across and he measures the diagonal from the other side of the pool to the top of the diving board to be 19 feet. Is the diving board at a 90 degree angle with the ground? Can you explain this to me? ;A;

OpenStudy (ash2326):

do you have any figure given in the problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes...one second.

OpenStudy (ash2326):

yeah, it'll help , thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That was the one given. But none of it makes sense to me :(

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Is that a right triangle?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Use the pythagorean theorem to check.

OpenStudy (ash2326):

if the diving board is at 90 degrees, the triangle shown in figure will be a right triangle. you have hypoteneus =19 feet, perpendicular=12 feet and base =15 feet. Check if it satisfies pythagoras, if it doesn't then the angle is not 90 degrees

OpenStudy (mertsj):

If it is a right triangle, then the diving board is in the correct position.

Okay! Thank you I understand :D
