OpenStudy (katerina):

If a star is located 100 light years from Earth, what can you conclude about the light from the star?

OpenStudy (katerina):

I have a few options. Hold on and I'll copy the choices(:

OpenStudy (katerina):

The light will take 100 years to reach Earth. The light will take 300,000 years to reach Earth. The light will travel a total of 300,000 kilometers to reach Earth. The light will take 100 seconds to reach Earth.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

stars never die... they are immortalized in hollywood films

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

The light will take 100 years to reach earth. A light year is the distance that it takes light to travel in one year, so if the star is 100 ly away it will take it's light 100 years to get here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, Katerina. Let's figure this out. We know that the star is roughly 9.5*10^17 metres away, and that light travels at 3*10^8 metres per second. So, we know that distance = speed * time time = distance/speed 9.5*10^17/3*10^8 = 3166666667 seconds. So, none of the options are that, wait. Let's check, actually what that is in years. That is 100 years. So the correct option is 'It will take 100 years to reach earth. Or 100.6902049 years to be exact ;)

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

@Ceasefire: It takes much longer than 100 years for a start to die out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know. I was stupid. Leave me alone :P

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

lol

OpenStudy (katerina):

Thank you guys for your help(:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a star is located 100 light years from Earth only means that whatever you can conclude about the light from the star was the state of things there 100 years back in time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

True but not one of the choices.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i was just reflecting on it

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

AH.
