what is the function of natural killer cells in immune system?

They are cytotoxic lymphocytes and function as part of the innate (non-specific) immune system. They recognize pathogen in a general manner, releasing proteins that destroy other cells. They do not provide lasting immunity (like you get from the adaptive imune system).
