What do you believe has had more of an impact upon contemporary popular culture: creative or academic writing? Please note, theological texts are not to be considered.

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

Is this simply a question or the basis for a thesis, because I could compose a thesis arguing in either direction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, just a question. I'm a Ph.D student. One primary thesis is more than enough, thank you very much :P

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

lol I bet. In that case I believe that creative writing has had more of an impact on popular culture. I basis this in the fact that our lives are dominated by creative works to a much higher degree than academic works. When you consider most of television, nearly all of motion picture and theater, a good majority of the Internet can be considered creative works and the amount of time we as a culture spend consuming this works, it is clear that creative writing has had a very significant impact on pop culture.

I would have to agree with the creative writing having more of an impact as people like the drama, suspense, wondering what will be said or done. It gives them down time, rather than always the facts of the situation which we are dealing with everyday all day long as we live on.

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

Plus as humans in general we have a strong desire to be entertained. This has been true for along, long time. Hundreds of years ago before radio, television, video games, and motion pictures there was theater, court jesters, and bards or minstrels. In the old west there was the cabaret. And of course there has always been books and literature, of course, those are more accessible to the entire populous now. In medieval times only the rich had books and in the old west most were illiterate. We seek anything that can allow us to escape the 'hardships' of real life even though most of the hardships we face these days don't hold a candle to those back in the day. Of course, academic writing does have its merits. Without academic writing a lot of the technology that we have today that allows us to enjoy these things would not even be around. Could you imagine if nobody had ever written an academic paper on the transistor? Radios, televisions, and video games would not even exist. Computers would still be the size of your living room. The the impact that academic writing has had has primarily been in the academic community rather than in pop culture.
