How much gold, arriving in San Francisco, triggered the gold rush? Was it 1 ton, 2 tons or 500 pounds?

My reading suggests that the amount was much smaller that any shown in your question, possibly only ounces or some pounds. Workers on the site the first find gave up work after the first traces of gold were found and other "locals" rushed in rather quickly, news spread and off it went. It doesn't take much to start a gold rush.

Funny enough I wrote 2 tons and got it right. So guess I could say we have both learned something new. :)

Interesting, can you advise as to the source of the report of 2 tons. All the reports I could find about the mill (work site) mentioned very little gold. Perhaps a newspaper article with a "story" to tell embellished the amount somewhat.
