how could i start off my essay when writing a thematic essay on forrest gump the book not the move.....the theme is life is like a box of chocolate

A theme of a work is its message. What does the book tell you life is like? How is it like a box of chocolates? Often students confuse theme with subject. "Life" is a subject. The author's message about "life" is the theme. A good way to start an essay is by naming the work and the author. for example, "In the novel Forrest Gump [use italics for the book name or underline it] by Winston Groom, the author wants us to think about life as "a box of chocolates." By this, Groom means that we should think about life as being XXXX. " This is when you describe the meaning of the metaphor and back it up with examples from the novel.
