but what am I doing if I divide a whole number by an improper fraction, or an equivalent decimal of 1+0.25? for example 100/1.25. I'm looking for an explanation in plain words please. This is to do with working out the dry density of a soil sample, less the water content.

good question. i want to know that too.

you can change the decimal to an improper fraction....then mulitply by its reciprocal....

we are studying improper fractions in class.

flip the fraction and multiply...

Hi Pross, thanks for that. However, I know how to carry out the operation, I just can't figure out what it's actually telling me. For example, is it telling me that if the whole number is a quarter of the full amount, then taking away another value? perhaps not explaining it very well
