OpenStudy (sh3lsh):

Do all viruses undergo the lysogenic stage?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, some viruses "bud off" from the host cell, one well known example of this is the HIV virus. This is an electron micrograpth of this happening. http://www.soton.ac.uk/images/chemistrySIAimages/hiv.jpg This picture basically shows a cross section view of the cell surface of a cell infected with HIV virus. The dark lower part is the cell and the white upper part is the outside of the cell. The budding process is how the virus particle gets encapsulated by lipid membrane.
