how do u subtract a mixed number?
convert that into a fraction.
What's the whole problem?
Make sure the fractions have the same denominator.
A mixed number is like 4 1/2 for example. You change it into a improper fraction. so, you multiply 4x2+1 and that would be 9. Your keep the bottom number and so it is 9/2. you do the same with another mixed fraction. so another could be 2 1/2 and it would be 5/2. Then if the bottom numbers were different, you would have to find the common multiple and multiply the numbers by another number that would get both denominators to get the same multiple. You multiply the top number by the same number you multiplied the bottom number by. In this case, both bottom numbers are the same, so you just do 9/2 - 5/2 = 4/2. in this case, you can simplify top and bottom by two. So it would be 2/1. 2/1 is the same as 2, so your answer is 2
another ex: 4 1/3 + 3 1/2= 13/3 + 7/2 13/3 + 7/2 is not the same. find the same multiple of the two numbers. LOWEST COMMON MULTIPLE. the lowest would be 6. 13/3 x 6 is 78/6 7/2 x 6 is 42/6 so its 78/6 - 42/6 =36/6 you can simplify top and bottom by 6. 36/6 / 6 = 6/1 6/1 is the same as 6
