I suggest you go back in time a bit to the dot com boom/bust to get some perspective then look at what's happening now. Check out some survivors to see how they lasted and/or grew, it wasn't a pretty sight. 
New opportunities would still be in the services area, eg software development and support - see financial services, cloud servers.
Some hardware areas may include storage devices, cloud access devices, maybe even organic or quantum computing.

Cloud services are relatively new in the IT industry. Companies that provide cloud services would be good to look at for your start up examples. Google and Apple provide cloud services, but have been around for a while, so it's hard to view them as start ups. However there are plenty of other cloud providers that you could look at Dropbox would be a good start:
