The use of compromise played a significant role in delaying the conflicts that culminated with the civil war. Since the founding of the country and the initial compromise accorded to Virginia and South Carolina requests, slavery wasn't abolished in the original US Constitution. This factor than became a working norm with the northern states allowing the southern states to dictate terms from everything on how 'property' and sales taxes were assessed to which territories could become or apply for statehood.

compromises were a temporary solution to the debates over slavery. from the idea of manifest destiny the people in the US wanted to gain more land and with more land there was an issue with slavery so everytime new land was added the union a new compromise had to come up to stop the issue of slavery
