Facts rather than opinion would better suit a major paper like this, opinion as you will see in your research clouds too many issues - and perhaps causes the divisiveness under study.
What is religion, what is it about religion that is divisive - is it divisive/should it be? What are common features of differing religions and what/how have they come to be seen as divisive?
Where and how did religion develop and progress into what we see today - are the differences then more a matter of cultural location/history than the idea of a deity - are we fighting each other for some other reason and just using religion as a convenient excuse?
Why do humans have a need for religion - do we really believe in a god or is it just another form of stronger people suppressing the weaker - in mind and/or body?
So gather your facts then form an idea of how you might tackle the thesis, then gather more facts that will help with the direction you've chosen - you can cover many issues or just a few major things that cause division.
