what does the ^ mean that I keep seeing on here?

myininaya (myininaya):

\[x^4\] some people might be lazy and write x^4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it lets you know something is in superscript, raised to a power.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh. ok. I had no clue what that was and thought maybe if I knew I might be able to help a little. but I am not very good with math myself. I came here because I am having trouble with graphing equations. :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@myininaya: the really lazy people just write x4. Given the profuse abuse of mathematical notation around these parts, x4 could be any of:\[\Large \begin{array}{l} 4x\\ \times 4\\ {x^4} \end{array}\]

myininaya (myininaya):

lol
