Group of space explorers are travelling to a distant solar system. To make the trip they go into suspended animation. Something goes wrong and they awaken to find they cannot go back into hibernation and have to spend the rest of their lives aboard the ship.

How about an inner space, head journey?  Use the outer-space items as metaphors for the journey of self discovery - each new planet, system or activity is a part of the mind/soul/whatever eg. terraforming is childhood development, alien life for uncertainties. I'm not much into the sci-fi but I'm sure if you read some there are plenty to find a use for.

Any more details about the project requirements? For example what are you going to do once you have a simple plot - what's the point of the assignment?
