The Ptolemaic theory seemed logical to early astronomers (and philosophers) because their observations appeared to confirm that the stars and Sun rotated around the Earth. Without an understanding of the breadth and scope of the universe, the only logical explanation for the appearance of the Sun in the east and its disappearance in the west every day was that it was circling the Earth.
