As much as I hate dispraising such a respected figure, I must say that Lincoln, despite his avocations to preserve democracy and freedom, was in fact a racist who did not care at all about the slaves that his proclamation was intended to protect. ^Is there a better way of saying he didn't care about the slaves at all? My way sounds weird. Thanks!

Lincoln was a republican.

And he didn't care FOR the slaves, he cared about the expansion of slavery. He didn't want slavery to expand into the west and take up all the land.

sry i am not so familiar with lincoln, im a canadian writing a project on him haha

He was a politician, his personal views were probably like today's "leaders" - not necessarily useful or helpful or reflective of the general facts/truth about slavery and society etc. Slavery was an economic issue as much as anything and its continuance was not beneficial to the prosperity of the US - a matter usually more important to pollies.
