a solid aluminum cube measureing 15 inches on a side is melted and rolled into aluminum wire is 0.2 inches in diameter. what will b length of the wire?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

The volume of the cube is 15^3 or 3375 in^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i did get that far on my own. i need to know where to to go from here.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

The wire will have the same volume but it is in the form of a cylinder whose radius is .1 and whose height (the length of the wire) is what we are trying to find. So V of a cylinder = area of the base times the height. The base is a circle so 3375=pi(.1)^(h) 3375=pi(.01)h 3375/(.01pi)=h h=107429.6 inches

OpenStudy (mertsj):

See. The wire is a long skinny cylinder.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok that would be the cross section of the cube. so the deal after the cube is melted the wire would be that long (107429.6in)

OpenStudy (mertsj):

well, I don't know what the "cross section" of the cube has to do with it. The deal is that when you melt the cube you have 3375 cubic inches of aluminum that you can reshape into anything you want. In this problem, they chose to shape it into a long skinny cylinder.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok I have may have really over analyzed this whole problem. So after everything is said and done the length of the wire is 107429.6 inches?
