If x is negative and y is positive then x-y is negative and xy is negative. negative divided by negative is positive.
i am now thinking this might mean \[\frac{x-y}{xy}\]

thats correct ok, so i messed up somewhere
so both numerator and denominator are negative right? whole thing is positive. i was reading in incorrectly, sorry
so if iwas to plug in some numbers then this would be along the write lines. -2-4/-2*4---- -2+-4/-2*4 ----> -6/-8 and since both are negative that makes it positive
