The first water-powered textile mills changed the face of industry in the States in the last years of the 18th century and the early 19th in its first Industrial Revolution. The United States, up until that point, had largely been using severely outdated techniques in textile production. As more mills were built, it dramatically changed the way that manufacturing was done and what people would expect in terms of wages and working conditions. The factory system rose up alongside it centralizing the production of goods as opposed to having to rely on scattered workshops for the same thing. This, along with water powered mills, allowed local economies to quickly expand their ability to stock goods for export and sale. A push for more roads to help link together industrial hubs created an efficient transportation system, further tying the nation together in many other ways. All of this helped to bolster the US' economic independence. The US would go through a Second Industrial Revolution following the Civil War. Steam engines were further developed and used in factories simplifying manufacturing. The creation of the steel industry, railroads, and electricity would fuel incredible advances in both the way goods were made and how people's lives coped with the changing times while introducing a number of social problems as well.
