This comes from the definition of absolute value which is: \[|x| = x\] if x > 0, \[|x| = -x\] if x<0. If x=0, then \[|x| = 0.\] In your example we see \[|-1|\] since -1 < 0, we have that \[|-1| = -(-1) = 1.\]
