could someone explain the stem an leaf plot?

a stem-and-leaf plot has several purposes including:

1) display large group of numbers
2) demonstrate the distribution of a sample of numbers

okay... yah. and so i know like what it is sort of and how you write it and stuff. but what i don't get is that so for example you have this data:

17,7
13,3
14,5
17,2 and soooo forth. what do those numbers mean.. an example?
