OpenStudy (lollylau):

[Challenge] There are chickens and rabbits in a cage. There are 35 heads and 94 legs. Find the number of each of them WITHOUT USING EQUATIONS.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

HOw are you supposed to solve this without equations?

OpenStudy (lollylau):

It's possible. It's just that you can't (maybe yet).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I bet you can't show us a solution that doesn't use equations, if not explicitly then implicitly

OpenStudy (lollylau):

ready for solution?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

No. We're still thinking.

OpenStudy (lollylau):

ok.

OpenStudy (lollylau):

i actually ans a similar problem using this method. (1 day ago also on OpenStudy)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me try this and see if it works. i think it is really no different from solving the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 5 4 7 ____ 1 2 2 3 is it right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have seen this is in the old mathschallenge.net

OpenStudy (lollylau):

o rly?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes 1 star problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup 12 chickens and 23 rabbits - got to be

OpenStudy (lollylau):

your arithmetic isn't bad, satellite

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok that does it. kind of cool huh?

OpenStudy (lollylau):

Diagram method: 1. Draw 35 circles, representing heads. Each animal must have at least 2 legs (assume animals are in good condition). 2. Draw 2 "sticks" out of each circle, representing legs. 3. Keep drawing legs until the number of legs reach 94. 4. COUNT.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok there are like 200 pages here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Almost the problem "BIRDS AND BUNNIES". Btw not interesting there is no reason of why shouldn't I use equations here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right .... what I should have asked is : "Why solve it without equations?" It's clearly much faster than barnyard drawings.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

agree with ffm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am fairly certain it is the same. divide by two and subtract, but it does kind of look cool just writing the answer down without variables. i like it

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Oh gee. Can't we just have a little fun without carping?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i still think it is cool, but i can't find the problem on the link ffm sent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Problem ID: 351

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ffm lol, they are not in order!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how about a page number. i still can't find it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Page number 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh but this is just the regular solve using equation method, i did something different

OpenStudy (anonymous):

number of head 3 5 half number of fee 4 7 subtract 1 2 subtract again 2 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why is this working?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is for the first line subtract 3 from 4 and 5 from 7 for second line subtract 1 from 3 and 2 from 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is why i thought it was cool
