A bolt drops from the ceiling of a train car that is accelerating northward at rate of 2.6 m/s^2 a) what is the acceleration of the bolt relative to the train car and at what degree to the what direction from the vertical? b) What is the acceleration of the bolt relative to the Earth?

OpenStudy (vishal_kothari):

The accelleration of the bolt with respect to the train is just the negative of the accelleration of the train (2.6 m/s^2) since the velocity of the bolt (relative to the earth) does not change once it is dropped.

OpenStudy (vishal_kothari):

The acceleration of the bolt with reapect to the earth is g ( the acceleration due to gravity) the same as if it were dropped from a standstill....
