you have some money in your pocket. you spend half on lunch and then a quarter of what you have left on a beer. you are left with $1.50 how much did you have to start with?

lets make it nicer and say
you have some money in your pocket. you spend half on lunch and then a quarter of what you have left on a ice cream. you are left with $1.50. how much did you have to start with?

since you spent one quarter of your money on ice cream that means you have 3/4 of your money left. and $1.50 is 3/4 of $2. so you know you had $2 before you bought the ice cream. since that is half of the money you had originally, you started with $4.

if these prices seem very low, say you ended with $6 and $6 is 3/4 of $8 so you had $16 to start with, spent $8 on lunch leaving you with $8 and then a quarter of that ($2) on ice cream
