why pure water is not a good conductor of electricity and what is the need of adding other substance to it ?

pure water has no (or at least very few) ions in it. In order for a material to carry electricity, the material has to allow electrons to move freely through it. The addition of salt would turn water into a conductor. the sodium and chloride ions create a medium through which electrons can move

@jfraser if it is true that it has no ions or charge den there is a topic of bio in which it is said water potential of pure water is max. due to having free ions,and it is also said if we add solute its water potential decreases as the flow of free ions decreases..

Pure water has a maximum potential of zero. Adding a solute drops teh potential to larger negative values. Pure water has no appreciable concentration of ions. If it did, then pure water would conduct electricity, and it does not.

Pure water has no real concentration of any ions. None of the biology teachers i work with suggest that pure water can carry electricity. Somewhere, you are reading something wrong.

The greater the concentration of water in a system, the greater is its kinetic energy or ‘water potential’. Hence, it is obvious that pure water will have the greatest water potential
